Origins 2026 ~ Wargame HQ Games Spotlight

Armchair Dragoons PAO, 29 June 2026

While our partners are key to making the Wargame HQ go, they’re not the only cogs in the machine.  Our GMs bring all sorts of games to our tables, and we’ve got a few other special events for our players, too.

Kriegsspiel

There are some events that you need a convention infrastructure to pull off.  Outside of a convention, it can be a real challenge to pull together enough players & runners, never mind the space, to execute anything related to a real Kriegsspiel.  For the past several years, we’ve set aside a handful of our larger tables specifically for these players, and our GM has used the events to refine—and later promote—his upcoming Battle Decisions: Kriegsspiel set from Catastrophe Games.  Over the years we’ve had as many as 16 players and as few as 6.  We’ve added a limited ‘team’ Kriegsspiel at the front of the convention (everyone on the same team is looking at the same map, but the teams are still double-blinded to each other).  And we’ll keep scheduling them if people keep showing up for them.

Flying Pig Games

While not fully-integrated and running their own table for the weekend, we did have a solid representation from Flying Pig Games, and were even able to carve out a bit of table space from a canceled game1 for a pickup game.  We even got to meet the newest little Piglet, as Denver and William had their daughter with them.  David Thompson was showing off the pre-production copy of Rebels Against Rebellion and Denver had her own Relic Wars design that’ll be relaunching on crowdfunding this Fall.

Wharf Rat Games

The Wharf Rats were back, with some sessions of Forlorn Hope2  and Urgent Commands3 and even Wes & Maurice’s upcoming pair of games The Emperor’s Choice / The Emperor’s Voice which will be published by Worthington but we needed somewhere to park the photos.

This is the latest article in our series of articles covering Origins 2026 and you can find a carousel linking all of them across the bottom

Professional Wargaming

A couple of the grad students from the US Army Command & General Staff College brought (or sent!) their designs from the Master’s program at Ft Leavenworth.  We had a game on Space Force operations that includes planning and resourcing those ops, and another on WW2 in North Africa with an emphasis on logistics play.  There was also a design about the 1777 campaigns in the American Revolutionary War from a CGSC designer, but it was not the project for his degree.

Littoral Commander Series

These have been a staple of the Wargame HQ since 2021, with a couple of different GMs showcasing different members of the family over the past few years.  In 2026, we dusted off the older, still-in-development Ukraine module, and also brought back the currently-on-pre-order Space Force game.

All The Other Games

There’s a grab-bag of ASL, Fighting Wings, Robotech, At Storm’s Edge, And The War Came, Star Fleet Battles, a new L&C game, Front Toward Enemy, and more all mixed in here.  All of these were scheduled events in the official program, except the Overlord game from VUCA.

Our Staff

We don’t often capture great photos of our crew in “action” but sometimes we get a good candid shot or three.

The Raffle(s)

And finally, our raffle(s).  Every player that joins us for a game gets a raffle ticket they can deposit for a chance at a specific game from our awesome donors4 and on Sunday, everything goes home with someone so we don’t have to take it back with us.  This year, we also added a mini-raffle on Saturday night for the games with multiple copies, as we’d had complaints from some folks about having to hit the road on Sunday mornings and not able to stay for the raffle.  Any photos you see with Ardwulf are from that night; the rest5 are from Sunday.  We tried to livestream Sunday (as in years past) but the audio on the broadcast was dreadful so we apologized to the Freddie Mercury, the Patron Saint of Microphones, and sacrificed the recording in a quest for his forgiveness.

note that these are lower resolution than most of the gameplay photos

Interested in joining us at the Wargame HQ?  It’s never too late to start planning!  9-13 June, 2027 is the next rally point in Columbus!  You can also join the discussion in our forums or in our Discord server and get some intel there.
