Gamesurvey.org Launches ~ #TuesdayNewsday

Just because we’re also reporting from GAMA Expo doesn’t mean #TuesdayNewsday isn’t still happening!

GS orgBack in 2006, Brant (at that school-not-to-be-named in Columbus) partnered with GAMA and some other folks to launch a massive online survey of hobby gamers (not just wargamers!) in an investigation of the motivations behind why people play what they play.

Well, we’re revisiting that research, correcting a few things we messed up last time1, and adding some new items around community engagement and interest in entrepreneurship.  This time around, we’ve partnered with Dr Ian Mercer from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and the survey is now available at www.gamesurvey.org

This is not a 10-item quickie poll or anything.  This’ll easily take you 20-30 minutes to complete, depending on how much you write at the end in the free-response items.

  1. I quit responding on the study. It’s poorly designed. For example, the choice of when you play games is either every day or 1-2 times per week; nothing in between.

Worst is the “favorite game” questions. I have favorites by category: war, sports, Euro, etc.
    I can’t name a single favorite game. I imagine I’m not alone…

  2. Literally every single survey in the history of ever has some complaint about it

But yes, we absolutely want a singular favorite game, because to ask everyone for a favorite in every type & genre category would’ve (1) turned the entire survey into a 14-hour ordeal, and (2) generated just as many complaints about “I don’t even play ___ game, so I won’t have a favorite”

Please do the best you can within the constraints we’re working with, either through the university’s IRB process which mandates certain things, or add’l questions around specific items the different research collaborators are poking at.
