Worthington Games sent out this update to their newsletter audience

Grant Wylie here with a small company update.

My wife Kristine is currently in the hospital with a brain tumor and has been since Monday.   All is as good as can be and it is operable and the prognosis is very positive both short and long term.  Surgery is this Wednesday.

The reason we are letting you know this is because we are a company of 5 with each of us handling specific roles that don’t always overlap.   I generally handle customer service response while assisting in the other areas, and designing games.

With that said we ask for your patience over the next 2 – 3 weeks as I am working from the hospital on my phone while dealing with things here.  I will try to answer questions and deal with issues as well as I can.  Mike, Sean, Mark, and Tommy will be designing great games and still working on shipping and keeping production rolling on everything.

Please keep Grant’s wife Kristine in your prayers and best wishes from the entire wargaming community to her for the best possible recovery.

This was right after we published last week, but it’s still newsworthy and worth including in the news.  The War Room is being retired by IDJester, and they’re all moving on to new things.

The Most Interesting Thing We Saw On Another Site This Week Was

Crowdfunding Kayfabe Is Dead (Rascal News)

Crowdfunding persists because it is the only scheme in town. Video games use it as a test bed, or last resort, for a project that traditional publishers won’t finance. It’s a novel method of doing business for scrappy teams with a vision beyond their capital. The vast majority of the tabletop industry perches precariously upon crowdfunding’s arms. A charitable read contends that Kickstarter, Backerkit, and Gamefound’s established audience and built-in marketing machine are boons for creators. The lion’s share of money flows through these platforms, and their staff work hard to ease the friction of plugging into their vast discoverability matrix. I’m sympathetic to such an argument on the individual level — we all gotta pay rent. But don’t mistake gravity for patronage. A black hole offers stable orbits, but its nature is to devour every last atom.

Essentially, publishers are walking away from commodified third-party crowdfunding sites to bring pre-orders back in-house.  So, uh, yeah . . .   in 2025, they’re catching up with where GMT Games was in 1997 🤣

Details about the upcoming The 2025 Armchair Dragoons Fall Assembly

Registered participants should check their email for a news update from the convention, which includes the discount code for Blue Panther games you should use to knock off the shipping costs for the games that Steve will deliver to the Fall Assembly.

If you registered after that, you should be able to see it in the convention news, and we’ll remind folks again later.  The deadline for that discount is 3 October, so Blue Panther has time to make sure they print everything they need to bring.

Focusing on the practitioner world ~ don’t forget about the dedicated area in our forums for the wargame professionals!

Previous week was spent at Connections UK, representing the Wargaming Lab of ISM. Some takeaways. First, it's always great to meet old friends and find new ones! Wargaming community is very welcoming, and I'm glad that Connections UK continue to hold sessions specifically dedicated to newcomers.
