CNX ONL Registration is Open + New Releases & More News ~ #TuesdayNewsday

Strap your brain 🧠 into its favorite command chair—it’s #TuesdayNewsday time!  ➡️

Registration is now open for Connections Online, the professional wargaming conference, co-sponsored by The Armchair Dragoons, will be held from 20-25 April 2026.  Core events will be held 21-23 April.

This year’s theme is Wargaming Soft Factors

Conference chair Chris Weuve says

“This year Connections Online is “Wargaming Soft Factors — Moving Beyond Kinetics.” This is one of those “wargaming fundamentals” topics, because if you don’t get morale and the other intangibles right, it’s hard to meet the objectives.  And of course, like all Connections Online conferences, we’re including lots of other gaming related topics as well.  I can’t wait to see what our presenters have to offer!”

Wargame Design Studio are now on Steam!  There’s a longer announcement here talking about their rollout on Steam, as well as the updates to how they’re handling older Tiller-era titles sold through HPS and others.

Our plan will be to always launch new games on our site first, followed a few weeks later on Steam. So, in the future we will issue Steam Keys at time of purchase in our Store in the same manner you get your serial numbers now. Our continued primary focus will be our Store front and direct sales. Nothing will change in the service you have been receiving, how you access your purchases and so forth. If you aren’t a Steam user nothing needs to change for you at all.

How might it affect current WDS customers?  Again, quoting from their announcement

here’s a recap:

  • Not a Steam user – nothing changes.
  • Steam user who buys direct – you will get a Steam key along with your purchase.
  • Steam user who wants to only be on Steam, you’ll be able to do that too as games release.
  • Pricing will be the same on both locations.

Each GAMA division (creators, publishers, manufacturers, etc – Armchair Dragoons are part of the “media & events” division) is represented by 2 members elected to the GAMA Board of Directors.  Those board members serve 2 year terms and their elections are offset by a year so half the board seats are available in the annual election.  The 2026 one just concluded and the winners of this year’s elections are

Board of Directors

  • Production: Michael Maggiotto Jr., BEST Human Capital & Advisory Group
  • Media & Events: Nicole Brady, SAHM Reviews
  • Wholesale: Tiffany Reid, Southern Hobby Distribution
  • Publisher: Heather O’Neill, 9th Level Games
  • Creator: Eartha Johnson, LegalWATCH

Team Retail

  • Jamie Mathy, Red Raccoon Games
  • Lea-Anne Welter, Red Claw Gaming
  • David Wheeler, Dragon’s Lair LLC
  • Boyd Stephenson, Game Kastle – College Park

Note that Team Retail has their own set of directors specific to their division (the largest of them by far) and from that group they will select which one will serve on the larger GAMA board.

The Best Thing We Saw On Another Site This Week Was

This thread from Contrarian on BlueSky about figure scale and digging back through the source material to learn how they were measured

First, we have to realize that early gaming scales were retroactive: Wargamers measured their toy soldiers, guestimated the average height of a soldier, and called that a scale. The classic 54mm scale, for example, is based on Britain Ltd toy soldiers. www.wbritain.com

(It apparently took a while for wargamers to realize they’d accidentally based scales on the average height of a 19th Century soldier. That’s a complication we’ll discuss later.)

Anyway, after Jack Scruby founded the first company explicitly manufacturing *gaming* miniatures, new scales were decided. Best I can tell, 20mm happened between 1959 and 1962. (I’m still researching!) “True 20mm” was already a term by 1967. fourcats.co.uk/mags/files/W… Note the mention of 25mm!

Yesterday, the best job I ever had closed its doors for good and it was incredibly sad to part ways with the team. As you can plainly see in this video, the board game industry has truly suffered a major loss. I’m gonna miss y’all!#coworkers #worklife #boardgames
