The Camel City Wargamers hosted the first CamelCon in Winston-Salem, NC on October 18, 2025. This was a one day mini-con with historical miniature wargames and some science fiction intended to allow newer and younger gamers the opportunity to see different periods, scales and types of games. The event was hosted at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club, and the venue worked well with the games being held in the banquet room adjacent to the bar and grill for easy access to food and drinks.
From 9:30 AM until 10:00 PM there were 40 attendees playing games including 28mm Vietnam, 28mm Saga/Dark Ages, 15mm Battle Cry, Wings of War, Sails of Glory, 28mm Battlesuit Alpha, Fearsome Floors, 28mm Chain of Command 2 and 1/600 Oak & Iron. All of the games were visually appealing and enjoyable to play for newer and seasoned gamers.
Of the 40 attendees 16 were either past participants in the Tabletop Battles summer camp or their parents and grandparents. This camp is a weeklong program for rising 5th through 9th Graders hosted at Summit School in Winston-Salem. Over the three years of the camp, 48 participants have played historical miniatures games, learned to paint figures, learned terrain modeling techniques, engaged in educational activities around the engagements being gamed, and heard military veterans speak about their service experiences.
Of the attendees at CamelCon, one mom, a dad, and a grandfather participated in games who had never seen a wargame before the event. Gamemasters came from the Triad, Charlotte, the Triangle, and Wilmington.
It was great to see new gamers being hosted and supported by more seasoned gamers. Ken Ellis had boardgames for sale and many of the young participants took home new games to learn and play.
It was a great day of gaming and fellowship and the Camel City Wargamers look forward to hosting folks again in Winston-Salem!
