Brant, Gary, and Mike are talking conventions! First, Brant & Gary take some time to discuss Buckeye Game Fest, with the events, experiences, and fun to be found at that one. Then, it’s time to talk Origins (and see below for the directory for all of our Origins coverage, both current & projected).
Don’t forget, you can always catch up with past episodes on the “podcast” tab of our site.
So let’s talk about Origins as a whole, some attendance numbers through the years, the annual hilarity that is the (complaining about) event registration, and then some detailed discussions of the events we’ll have at the Wargame HQ from Catastrophe Games & Fort Circle & PicoArmor (all of whom are planning to be there with us), plus GMT Games (who always offers a huge amount of support to our area), and folks like Invicta Rex Games (Song for War), On Target Sims (our Command Post Exercises), and more.
We spend some time discussing the expected shopping we’ll do at the exhibit hall, other events we’ll look for, and where we’re probably going to lose our wallets. Plus, what Gary’s show is going to do when all wargames start shipping with pre-rounded counters.
We also spend some time looking forward to some other events over the Summer that we probably won’t make, but would like to some time. We also take a few minutes to discuss the upcoming Armchair Dragoons Fall Assembly in October of 2023. And yes, after Brant says “last thing” we go on for another 10+ minutes.
And thus wraps season 10 of Mentioned in Dispatches, and we’ll see y’all in the Fall when we start season 11!
- Yes, this happened at Buckeye Game Fest, and it’s all Gary’s fault
- Voting for the Golden Geek Awards – specifically Liz Davidson’s Beyond Solitaire podcast
- New dice “advent-ure” calendars from Black Oak Workshop
- The Inaugural Armchair Dragoons Fall Assembly 2023, 20-22 October 2023, The Gamer’s Armory, Cary NC

At the Origins fair, I did see,
Gamers playing wargames with glee,
But one player’s luck,
Was worse than a duck,
His army was defeated by a flea.
Yes, a flea had managed to sneak,
Into his box, so sly and so meek,
And as he set up his board,
It jumped and ignored,
His pleas for it to take a back seat.
The flea’s moves were swift and were bold,
And soon the player’s fate was foretold,
For his army was weak,
And he couldn’t even speak,
As the flea won, and the game was sold.
So remember, at Origins beware,
Of fleas that might be lurking somewhere,
For they might just disrupt,
And leave you feeling stuck,
In a wargaming nightmare.
