Very true.  Still, the Fairey Swordfish was slower, 143 mph with torpedo compared to 180 mph with torpedo.
When the US Navy assigned popular names to its aircraft in late 1941, the TBD became the Devastator, although its nickname "torpecker" was still commonly use
