Welp, I finally broke down and picked this up.  Just got the base game for now -- I'll probably grab the DLC's later on (most likely via the Expansion Passes).

Here's the first faction I've created:

Nothing fancy, they're essentially just your classic Dwarves.  They're my favorite fantasy race, though, so I knew I had to start with them.  :)

I can't believe you both bought it before I did. Have I retained some adult discipline after all these years?

Well, I played for close to 8 hours yesterday evening, which is something I haven't done in a good while.  :o  That puts Age of Wonders 4 in the company of only a small handful of games (including Stellaris, BOTF, and FE:LH) that have gotten me to do that.

It's definitely not a deep fantasy 4x, but it's not trying to be.  Nor does it need to be -- the gameplay is compelling and enjoyable as is.

I finally came across the Dire Penguin:

They're a well-known "monster" unit among the player community; it's almost the game's mascot in a way.  As I don't like penguins, I will enjoy taking it down.  >:D

Without question, this is my favorite unit I've encountered so far:

Setting aside the fantastic unit model, I love that "Drink" is his signature ability, with "Frigid Belch" as its related signature attack.  (I also gotta respect a guy for making his own beer.)  ;D

Regardless of who broke first, I was never under any illusions that I *wasn't* getting this game at some point.  It was only a matter of time.  :P

That looks amazing.

It is.  Like I said back during the free weekend, AoW4 is a lot of fun.

I have become much more of a collector vs player:)

Same, GR.  Steam sales have ruined me.  :-[

Well it *is* a Paradox game, so yes.  :D

That being said, I'll point out two things:

1.)  Nearly every single DLC released so far has a "Positive" or "Very Positive" rating on Steam.  This is highly unusual for Paradox titles -- even when the main game itself is highly-rated (CK3, CS1, EU4, Stellaris, etc.), their DLC's are typically much more hit-and-miss.  The fact that the DLC for Age of Wonders 4 breaks this trend strongly implies they're probably worth the money one might spend on them.  (Not that I won't still wait for a sale, of course. ;)

2.)  More pertinently, none of the DLC is necessary.  Seriously, there's already so much content in the main game that it's ridiculous.  Between the different races & realms, and the fact that you can (and should!) create your own, once you feel up to it -- the customization options for each are pretty nuts -- means that AoW4 has (quite frankly) a huge amount of replayability.

Honestly, if this is just what the base game is like, I think my brain might explode when I start getting the DLC as well.  Thankfully, I'm in no hurry to do so, as there's already more than enough here to keep me happily occupied for a long time to come.

But not the complete ultimate definitive last miss-it-or-else bundle?
