I’ve read a lot this week about publishers constantly chopping and changing their release dates around October this year assuming they’d all guessed this was the magic month

I don’t know whether they’ll be glad or sad at this news

That's a great point, saw that too with other people changing their dates....maybe they now move back:)

As a consolation prize, Rockstar offers you this new trailer (which has already had over 90 million views just on YouTube :o ):

Are they all not a bit samey?

Personally I thought GTA V was one of the better open world games. Plenty to do and varied as I recall.

I can’t remember which the last one I played was

I still feel the occasional urge to get one on sale purely for the driving and listening to the great music

Yeah, I messed around with a couple of versions, was just simple mindless fun.  Didn't go into expecting a lot, just was fun to focus on something less serious.  Don't think I ever really got far in any of them but do plan on giving the next version a go.  BUt who knows, now we have a year to see how things turn out.

I remember getting 3 from my wife at the time for my birthday

Started game, walked down street and found space invaders and defender in an arcade - hours lost

Exactly, it is stuff like that makes the game entertaining.  Just hope they don't change their formula too much and try an over think it like others might.  Now I am getting the itch to load it up again:)

I have never played a GTA game.

They’re all no more than £16 at the minute

I’d recommend four over five by the looks of the reviews
