The Mongols still have a close relationship with horses.  Back around 1980, one of the networks did a show on the Soviet armed forces.  There was a division or two of Mongol horsemen armed with AK47s.
One officer noted that few nuclear weapons were aimed at their homeland.  If there were a nuclear war, the horsemen were willing to help the world recover and be "orderly".
